Amazonian Babaçu Oil

The oil extracted from the seed of the Babaçu fruit is rich in fatty acids that are essential in restoring the hydro lipid levels of hair. A healthy, restored hydro lipid level provides shine, hydration and a protective layer which guarantees the hair’s health.

The Babaçu Fruit

Babaçu is the fruit of a species of palm tree which is native to Northern Brazil. It is found in semi deciduous forests. It can reach 20 meters in height and it releases fruit between January and April. When the fruit is cracked open, it reveals a number of seeds from which we extract the Babaçu Oil used in Pro Keratin.

The process of harvesting Babaçu has changed little over generations, and the process is still completely artisanal. First, craftsmen break open the fruit, taking heed to separate out the seeds. Then the seeds are cooked until the oil separates, at which point they filter off the oil. Finally, the oil is sent to laboratories to be refined and purified.

Fortunately, the tree also serves many other uses. Its wood is used in constructing dwellings and its leaves are used as covering for walls, doors and windows. The milk and the pulp of the Babaçu fruit are used for cooking, and the shell of the fruit is used as fuel for fires. Finally, the internal structure of the fruit, which holds the seeds, is used in the production of crafts.
